San Felice Vineyard
:Name of Vineyard
The San Felice vineyard stretches out around the new (similarly-named) Winery, situated at San Felice Extra, a small hamlet lying to the north of Verona. San Felice is in the lower part of the Valpantena, a narrow strip of vineyards around 12 km. (7.5 miles) long that runs parallel to the Valpolicella Classico zone.
There are various hypotheses as to how the valley got its name. Some say that it derives from that of the Pantena progno (stream), which flows for some 30 km. (18.5 miles) along the valley. Others – rather more evocatively – sustain that the term derives from the Greek “pantheon”, and translate Valpantena, therefore, as “the valley of all the gods”, referring to the domestic gods of the Roman nobles who once colonized the zone, attracted by its natural beauty.
