Ockfener Bockstein
:Name of Vineyard
THE OCKFENER BOCKSTEIN VINEYARD Ockfen is an old wine-growing village located in a side valley of the Saar River, which is itself, a tributary of the Mosel. It is renowned for its outstanding vineyard site, 'Ockfener Bockstein', which is a steep valley slope with unobstructed southern exposure. The soil consists of hard slate stones, which, in fact leave a greyish blue powder on one's fingers. This is indicative of the solubility of the soil, which allows the vine roots to take up mineral nutrients quickly and easily during the growing season. As a result, the wines of Ockfener Bockstein are especially lively and minerally in character. At the top of the slope lies a forest, which retains much needed moisture. During dry periods, water from the forest floor is released into the sub-soils of the vineyards below, mitigating vine-stress during drought periods.
