Caves Santa Marta is the largest wine co-operative in the Douro, the oldest demarcated region in the world, established in 1758 by the Marquis of Pombal and Frei João de Mansilha, himself a native of Santa Marta. The matchless beauty of the hillsides of the Corgo valley and the area’s historic heritage combine with a hospitable and hard-working population to make the region an increasingly popular tourist destination. Situated amidst a “sea of vineyards” in the historic Terras de Penaguião district, Caves Santa Marta began life in 1959 with the blessing of St Martha, the patron saint of the Douro, grew and merged with two other important nearby wineries, Cumieira and Medrões, to make history. Today, with over 2000 members, Caves Santa Marta produces a tenth of all the wine produced in the Douro Demarcated Region, some 12 million bottles – 5 million bottles of port wine and 7 million bottles of Douro table wines, sparkling wines and aged brandies. In 1998, Caves Santa Marta was the first one to produce a vintage - Vintage 1998. In 2001, the company was considered the Year’s Best Cooperative Winery.
