Bodegas Langa
:Name of Vineyard
It is not exactly known when wine production began in Calatayud. However, It is thought that grape growing and wine consumption were important before the time of the Romans..
Marco Valerio Marcial, a poet born in Bilbilis – present day Calatayud – left his homeland, when he was 23, and moved to Rome, where his knowledge was appreciated by Caesars Titus and Dominicus due to his outstanding wisdom. It was him who first wrote about the excellent wines and vines from Bilbilis, dating back to 500 years B.C.. Since then, wine production has continued to be part of the basic economy of this area.
Several centuries later, concretely during the mid of the XIX century when the Langa family began a long and heavy path in close relationship with the millenarian culture of wine.
In 1867 Sr. Mariano Langa Gallego, started a small winery in the village of Morata de Jiloca. The business was continued by Sr. Juan Langa Mariscal, after his return from the Cuban war of independence in 1898. Later his sons, Juan and Sebastian, took over the business.
These were difficult times; nevertheless the innovative and determined approach of these two brothers led them to achieve new goals. It was 1945 when Juan and Sebastian, knowing the potential of wine growing in the area, left their village to open a wine cellar in Calatayud, settling in an old warehouse near the railway station. After two years in 1947, they would build up their own cellar in the new Bilbilis.
Some years later, in 1975 the daughter and son of Sr. Juan Langa Langa; Sta.Teresa and Sr. Juan José Langa Fuentes took up the reins of the company with new hopes and expectations.
It was 1982, when the Langa brothers, the present owners of the family business, took the important decision of leaving the old warehouse, inherited from their father, in Calatayud city to move to the natural, fresh slopes of Mount Vicor. This new setting would enable the introduction of state-of-the-art technology, a modern management approach to wine making, as well as continuous enlargements to be able to satisfy the growing demand for our products.
Today, the future of the family business is guaranteed because the fifth generation, attached to Juan and Cesar Langa Gonzalez, brings renewed hopes and expectations.
Nowadays; this a thriving company which has known how to adapt to the 21st century whilst keeping faith with time-honoured traditions.
