Chateau d'Epire - Savennieres

The Château d'Epiré is one of the oldest and more famous vineyard of the appellation Savennières. It has never been sold since the XVIIth century.
The estate is 11 hectares wide, including 9 hectares of vineyard.
The Castle and the Orangerie were built in 1850 after the transformation of the old family house. In those times the Savennières wine was one of the most expensive in France.
Like in the rest of France, vineyards were common in Anjou since Ancient Rome. But it's at the IXth century that Epiré vineyard was highly grown.
Under the Plantagenêts reign, when Anjou and Great Britain were close, wines from Savennières and Epiré were imported in Great Britain. May be this is why you have so much Savennières lovers in Oxford and Cambridge.
