Chateau de l'Horte
:Name of Vineyard
The Chateau was built in the 18th Century by the Marquis of St Félix, renown for his “Jardin à la française”, with exotic flowers such as orchids, which are on the label of the Reserve Speciale.
For several hundred years the ancestors of Jean-Pierre Biard have produced wine. The estate of Château de l’Horte was purchased in 1988. A new vinification cellar was built in 1989 and the first wine was vinified in the cellar of the estate in 1990.
Château de l’Horte is situated in the region of Corbières. Corbières is found in the triangle formed by the cities of Carcassonne, Nabonne and Perpignan, in the south of France. The region has generally a mild and dry climate influenced by the Mediterranean. In summer the cicadas can be heard in the pine trees, a sound characteristic of the south. The scent of lavender, thyme, rosemary and fennel gives its lovely bouquet, growing wild in the soils and amongst the rocks which are scattered throughout the hills of the area. The region is rich in history from Roman ruins to Cathar castles.
The entire harvest of the 30 Ha vineyard is handpicked and destalked before vinification. The grapes are grown on clay and chalky soils at Montbrun, a small village perched on the arid hills of the Corbières. The wines have a definite character and each new vintage retains the same constant qualities. All the production is bottled at the estate from which 75% is exported. Countries exported are: Holland, Belgium, Germany, England, Ireland, Switzerland, Canada, Brazil, Czech Republic, New Zealand and Singapore.
Medals: The Reserve Speciale 1990 (which was the first vintage) won a gold medal at the concours General Agricole in Paris in 1992. The same wine was also tasted by Robert Parker in 1993 and obtained 87/100 under his “Terrific bargains for less than $10”. Since then lots of medals have been awarded by the Concours des Grands Vins de Corbières every year, or the Guide Hachette thanks to the quality of the wines.
