Champagne Varnier-Fanniere Grand Cru
:Name of Vineyard
The FANNIERE Family started growing grapes in 1860. At this time, wine growers were selling all there grapes to the Champagne négociant house because they did not (and still do not) have enough vineyards of their own to produce the quantity of wine they needed to sell all around the world. The grapes from the most famous villages (Grand Cru) like Avize were the most sought after and were often used to produce the Cuvees de Prestiges. It was only in 1950 that Jean FANNIERE decided to produce his own Champagne. Success came quickly thanks to the quality of the Chardonnay Grapes from Avize. In the begining just few thousand bottles were produced, but the production increased each year to attain 10 000 bottles in 1965 when his daughter Josette and her husband Guy VARNIER took over the lead of the vineyard. They bought new vineyards in Oger and Cramant wich are also Grand Cru, to produce new Cuvées. IIn 1989, their son Denis VARNIER took over the vineyards upon completion of his degree in oenology. Denis wants to continue to work the vineyard and the wine in the traditionnal way instead of following the rest of the Champagne wich wants to industrialize their process. The use of the traditionnal horizontal press is one good exemple of his winemaking philosophy. Perhaps one day Pierre-Louis, Denis 's son, will perpetuate the tradition...
