Rockledge Vineyards

For two diehard Southern California beach lovers to end up in the “wine growing” business seems a bit of a stretch. But in 1988 , when now neighbor Joe Phelps told cousin Scott Snowden (of Snowden Vineyards fame) about the 42 acre property adjacent to his vineyard, Scott knew just who to call. Years before, I spent some of the most enjoyable evenings in my life sitting in Aunt Virginia’s (Scott’s mother) country kitchen - just up the road from where Rockledge is now - sampling different wines with great food and lively conversation. At that time I let it be known this was how I intended to end up spending my life. So, as soon as we arrived at the property, just in time to watch sheets of rain cross the Valley from the West towards us on a very non-Southern California winter day, the journey was on. And what a journey it has been, filled with setbacks, discoveries, dead-ends and celebrations. We have truly learned the hard way how to become farmers, respecters of nature, and winegrowers. Although we would not recommend our journey as a business plan; we would highly recommend it for any one interested in being challenged on a regular basis. By 1999 we found ourselves able to make the full time move to the vineyard where we built our home. This became the culmination of our dream and we learned to call the Napa Valley home. By that time, we had five harvests under our belt and thought it was time to launch Rockledge wines – 2005 is our seventh vintage. We are very content to spend the rest of our lives discovering what little secrets our property chooses to reveal about how to make its wine while getting close to that ideal of being delicious young, and equally delicious when old. Our journey continues and we invite you to share it with us through our wines.
