A warm, exotic cherry eau de vie – one of three new eau de vie spirits just released by Bonny Doon Vineyard.
Cherry brandy is not so terribly unusual, particularly in Europe where the French, Swiss, Germans and Italians all make versions. A cherry spirit aged over 13 years in cherry wood barrels [originally produced for balsamico tradizionale] is profoundly rare and indeed, this is the only example with which we are familiar. The barrel aging certainly provides a sweet, mellow glow to the spirit, though the perfume of the fruit remains front and center. The exceptional Montmorency cherries for this very special brandy come to us by way of an old orchard near Salem, Oregon.
