The plaintive wail of the Symphony of the Dispossessed sounds at the mere mention of chenin blanc. But listen to Clive Coates, MW's description of the archetypal Meursault and you might imagine he is drinking this wine: "At the same time dry and rich, with a flavor of hazelnuts...ripe peaches which have just been picked on a hot day...ample, sometimes gentle, wholly approachable...all in all you have something which is round and ripe and fruity with a rich buttery flavour which should be supported but not overwhelmed by new oak." There also is a faint waft of gunflint one often encounters in white Burgundy - a product of considerable lees therapy.
