2005 represents a return to riesling and it is a triumphant one at that. Saar auslese has always been our reference point as selected lots of the eastern Washington fruit actually want to be steely with citrus and black cherry bursts. The 2005 is more Pfalz like. The acidity is a tad lower, or at least the wine seems a little sweeter than the 2003. The wine shows a more tropical flavor impression of Asian pear, pineapple and peach with a savory sage or mint note underneath. We are encouraged that sucrophobes among the viterati east and west are decreasing in number – a sure sign the world is ready to let love [and semi-sweet riesling] in.
