DEWN Cabernet Franc, 2004

:Wine Rating

A ripe vintage in the Loire produces very particular cabernet franc, quite different from that found in California. The cabernet franc at hand seems curiously reminiscent of such Loire wines, with dusty rose petal, mulberry, marzipan tones. Gloriously absent are lashings of tannin and new wood, and the cold climate, vegetal quality that produces in adults the expression rendered on the face of a child eating frozen lima beans for the first time. We note parenthetically that a "very ripe" vintage in the Loire is something of an anomaly. The specific geometry of flavors one finds in such years-or in this wine-is not often encountered.
