Vintages 2004 and 2005 of Le Cigare Volant will dramatically demonstrate how vintage differences dictate a flexible approach to conjuring the most interesting assemblage of grenache, mourvèdre, syrah and cinsault. We shall witness in a year or so how 2005 was a grenache year. 2004 was manifestly a mourvèdre year, a year of small yields and great heat, conditions that favor mourvèdre from Contra Costa County. Le Cigare Volant proper was already biased in favor of mourvèdre in 2004. Cig Alt C poses – and answers – the question, what might happen if the exotic Asian spice, cherried pipe tobacco and lavender quality is not merely present and contained, but allowed to run wild?
