Old Telegram can generally be counted on to split the difference between worlds Old and New. It has always been very fruitful, though not monolithically so. The pungent raspberriocity known to insinuate itself into many of our red wines, is usually tempered by spice, smoked meat, leather and pipe tobacco. This mourvèdre derives from 100 year-old vines planted near the consistently infernal Sacramento River Delta. This is not to suggest that there are no vintage differences. The earthen/stony/smoky elements are more evident and the fruit is also a shaded more toward the stewed than fresh—a reminder of monstrous heat of 2004.
