The 2006 Sangiovese Rosato is the winery’s third bottling of grapes solely harvested from the vineyard at the Estate in Carmel Valley. Just over 5 acres of Sangiovese grapes were planted in 1998, including two different clones on quadrilateral trellising. While the first four vintages were ultimately blended with additional lots of Sangiovese, one clone of the Sangiovese grapes was grown and produced specifically as a Sangiovese blush wine — Rosato. The 2-acre lot was thinned for slightly larger berries and clusters, with a heavier crop resulting ultimately in a lower sugar and higher acidity. Hand harvested, immediately crushed and pressed, this wine was fermented cold to just over 3% residual sugar and held in stainless steel tanks until bottling in the winter. The vineyard’s cool climate due to the proximity to the ocean paired with extensive pruning and cluster thinning to maximize sugar development, ultimately resulted in grapes of ideal color and balance for the 2006 Rosato.
