Review: St. Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio 2008 Alto Adige, Italy

This is my go-to Pinot Grigio.  It is also my answer to the much better-marketed Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, which I find to be half the wine for about five more dollars.  St. Michael-Eppan, one of the most recently celebrated and cutting-edge wineries of Italy, hit the nail on the head with this well-balanced Pinot Grigio.  The color is very a very pale straw yellowish-green.  On the nose, delicate floralsjoust with cool wet stone and distinctive pear.  On the palette, apple joins pear, and a zesty acidity provides for a rounded, yet dry mouth-feel.  The finish is surprising long, and mineral. A great holiday or dinner-party wine, as it is extremely food-friendly and will pair just as easily with chicken as it will with fish.  Also a refreshing choice for the chef who finds cooking without a glass of white in hand, well, lacking...
